Medical Care for Newly Adopted Children
The list below includes some of the doctors in the U.S. who specialize in
international adoption medicine and who provide pre-adoption and post-adoption
assessments to adoptive parents and children.
They are great resources for obtaining medical information. They are also familiar
with conditions in other countries and can provide valuable insight and knowledge.
This list is by no means an exhaustive list. You mail a copy of the video (if you
receive one) and the medical report to the physician, and after he/she reviews the
material, you speak with them by phone. The doctor will most likely call you within a
few days of receiving the material and it may very well be in the evening or at night.
Prepare a list of questions so you can get the most out of your conversation. If your
spouse is available, use a speakerphone or have him/her pick up a phone
extension. If your spouse is unavailable, you can ask to record the conversation.
Make notes!
Generally, if you request the review of the pre-adoptive medicals and video, you
should include a donation. The figures of $100 to $200 are customary, but always
inquire as to the suggested donation amount. The information you receive is far
more valuable.
