Adopting Children from Ukraine
There are many children in Ukrainian orphanages in need of loving homes.
Ukrainian orphanages offer excellent care for the children.
Requirements/Eligibility
Ukraine is open to married couples and single women. Single women must be at
least 25 years old.
There is no requirement for length of marriage, although 2 years is typically
recommended.
Previous divorce is acceptable.
Available Children
All children who are immediately available for adoption are currently in
orphanages and in need of loving homes. The available children for adoption
range in the ages of 14 months to 15 years. Families discuss possible referrals,
which include photographs and medical information, only after arrival in Ukraine.
(It is against Ukrainian law to show photographs and videos of available children
to prospective parents prior to the parents traveling.)
Families need to be prepared for the possibility of developmental delays,
undernourishment, and/or minor correctable medical conditions. There are many
avenues to learn about the possible issues surrounding children in orphanages.
Our medical information is available to you as are a number of other sources.
Learning about these situations will help you better understand corrective
measures(s). It will also better enable you to make the best “life decision” for you
and your child(ren).
Time Frame
Families can expect to be home with their child(ren) in less than twelve months
from the time of application, pending completion and approval of paperwork. The
time frame may vary by gender, age of child, and program selected.
The Process
Families prepare and submit their dossier to our agency. It is then legalized by the
State Department and authenticated at the Ukrainian Consulate prior to being
sent to our facilitator in Ukraine, who then submits it to the NAC (National
Adoption Center) in Kiev. Once received in Ukraine, this takes approximately one
to two months.
Families are then given a travel date and can expect to be in Ukraine for two to
three weeks. Please consult preparing to travel to help you prepare for your trip,
as well as travel information for assistance with travel plans and details.
Once in Ukraine, families are met by our facilitator, and then meet with officials
from the NAC who discuss possible referrals. Families look at photographs and
medical information for several children, then select and meet the child. Once the
referral is accepted, a court hearing is set. Between the acceptance and court
date, you have several days to spend with your child. (Should you not accept the
initial referral, you would continue to discuss other possible referrals with the NAC
officials.)
After the court hearing, a new birth certificate and passport is applied for and at
this time, one parent may return home if needed.
You and your child return to Kiev and visit the American Medical Center where
your paperwork is reviewed by the Embassy in Kiev. You are then ready to travel
to Warsaw, Poland where your paperwork is reviewed by the American Embassy
and a visa is issued for your child to return to the U.S. This usually takes two
working days.
While your adoption is finalized in Ukraine, we recommend re-adoption here in
the U.S. at a later date.
“You have been wonderful to
work with, and we have highly
recommended Frost to several
others we have come
in contact with. Thanks, again.”
